Understand Visa Requirements
Before planning your trip to the USA, you'll first want to make sure you have applied for the necessary visa beforehand. Most foreign nationals will need to apply for a B-2 visa, otherwise known as the visitor visa, unless you're excused based on the Visa Waiver Program. It's essential to check the U.S. Department Of State government page to see what you need before planning your trip.
Choose A Specific Area Of The United States To Visit
Unless you have months to spend overseas, you likely won't be able to visit all of the United States in one visit. Instead, we recommend you choose one specific area to visit and spend your time there depending on what you want to do. For example:
- If you want to see big cities, visit New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, or Chicago
- If you want to visit national parks, choose the states of Arizona, Montana, Utah, Colorado, or California
- If you want warmer weather or to be near the beach, visit Florida or California
While these are just a few examples, there are plenty of other areas to visit in the USA depending on your interests or the type of weather you prefer.
Purchase A USA Travel Sim Card
A great way to stay connected while in the United States is by purchasing a prepaid USA tourist SIM card. This will give you access to data and voice services while in America, which can come in handy for map use, looking up directions, or calling a taxi. It's best to purchase a USA tourist SIM card before your trip to ensure you can have coverage from the moment you arrive.
We recommend purchasing a SIM card that offers unlimited data so you can enjoy your trip without any delays or interruptions with your service.
Prepare Not To Use Public Transportation
Unlike other countries that have well-developed trains and buses, the United States does not have a public transportation system as interconnected as it is in other parts of the world unless you're only visiting New York City or Chicago. This means that you will likely need to rely on taxis, ride-sharing services (such as Uber or Lyft), or use rental cars to get around.
Purchase A Universal Adapter
The United States has type A and B plugs. The standard frequency is 60hz, and the standard voltage is 120v. If you're coming from a country that uses a different type of electrical outlet than the United States, we recommend purchasing a universal adapter prior to your trip. This will allow you to use your devices (phone, laptop, camera, etc.) without any issues while in America.
You Won't Need To Pull Out A Ton Of Cash
Unless you're planning to visit a very rural area, you likely won't need to pull out any cash while in the United States. The vast majority of businesses, both large and small, accept debit and credit cards as a form of payment. This also includes toll roads, parking meters, and more. We suggest pulling out at least USD 200 before your trip just in case, but you likely won't need to use it.
Always Have Your ID Ready
While it's not required to always have your I.D. on you, we recommend always having it ready just in case. This is especially true if you're visiting a bar, nightclub, or casino, as they will likely ask for identification before serving alcohol or entering the premises. Having your passport or driver's license on hand will make things much easier should this occur.
