Staying connected across Argentina's vast landscape

Argentina stretches over 3,500 kilometres from the subtropical north to the glaciers of Patagonia. The distances are enormous, the transport options vary wildly, and the infrastructure changes depending on where you are. Here's how your eSIM fits into a real trip across the country's different regions.

Buenos Aires and the Río de la Plata

Buenos Aires is where most Australian travellers start, and it's a city that runs on mobile data. From booking rides through Uber or Cabify to navigating the Subte metro system, having a live connection makes the city far more manageable. Google Maps works well here for walking and public transport directions, and you'll want it running as you move between neighbourhoods like San Telmo, Palermo and La Boca.

WhatsApp is Argentina's default communication app. Restaurants take bookings through it, hotels send check-in details through it, and tour operators confirm pickings through it. Having it connected via your eSIM from the moment you land at Ezeiza International Airport saves you from hunting for airport Wi-Fi or queuing at a SIM kiosk.

The city's café culture and tango scene are best navigated with a data connection too. Finding milonga schedules, checking opening hours for museums like MALBA or the Recoleta Cultural Centre, and translating Spanish menus all rely on your phone being online.

Patagonia and the south

Patagonia is Argentina's headline outdoor destination, but coverage patterns change significantly once you leave the cities. El Calafate and Ushuaia both have solid signal, so you'll be connected while organising glacier tours, booking restaurants and checking weather forecasts. The approach roads to Perito Moreno Glacier have coverage, and you'll have signal at the main viewing platforms.

El Chaltén, the hiking capital, has coverage in town but signal drops once you're on the trails. The trek to Laguna de los Tres and the Fitz Roy viewpoints won't have reliable data, so download your trail maps and route notes before you set off. AllTrails or Maps.me both work well offline for Patagonian hiking.

The Ruta 40 road trip between El Calafate and Bariloche is one of the great drives in South America, but long stretches have no signal at all. Plan your fuel stops and accommodation in advance. You'll reconnect in towns like Esquel and El Bolsón, but the remote sections between them are genuinely off-grid.

Mendoza, the northwest and Iguazú

Mendoza has reliable coverage across the city and into the surrounding wine regions. Booking bodega tours through Uber or renting bikes through local apps works smoothly. The Aconcagua area has patchy signal once you leave the main road, but the town of Puente del Inca and the park entrance typically have reception.

The northwest route through Salta, Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca is increasingly popular with Australian travellers. Salta city has strong coverage, and you'll stay connected through most of the Quebrada towns like Tilcara and Purmamarca. The drive through the Salinas Grandes salt flats has intermittent signal, but you'll reconnect as you descend.

Iguazú Falls has good coverage on both the Argentine and Brazilian sides. For most phones, your Australian SIM stays active alongside your Argentina eSIM for banking codes and verification messages. Just switch its mobile data off to avoid roaming charges.

Before you fly

  • Download offline maps for Patagonia. Google Maps lets you save areas for offline use. Download El Chaltén, the Ruta 40 corridor and any national parks you plan to visit. Coverage drops quickly outside towns in the south.
  • Install WhatsApp before you arrive. It's how Argentina communicates. Hotels, restaurants, tour operators and even some shops use it as their primary contact method.
  • Download a currency converter app. Argentina's exchange rates fluctuate significantly. Having a live converter helps you compare prices in pesos to AUD, especially at markets and street vendors.
  • Save your accommodation addresses in Google Maps. Argentine addresses can be confusing for first-timers, especially in Buenos Aires where streets change names at major avenues. Having saved pins makes navigation easier.
  • Check Uber availability for your destinations. Uber works in Buenos Aires, Mendoza and a few other cities but isn't available everywhere. In smaller towns, you'll rely on remises (local car services) or taxis.

Argentina eSIM data guide

Buenos Aires is a high-data city between navigation, WhatsApp messaging, restaurant lookups and photo sharing. Patagonia uses less data day-to-day since you'll often be offline on trails, but you'll burn through data on town days when uploading photos and planning logistics.

  • 5GB suits a short Buenos Aires city break of 3-5 days with light photo sharing.
  • 10-15GB is the sweet spot for a 10-14 day trip mixing Buenos Aires with Patagonia or the northwest.
  • 20GB suits extended trips covering multiple regions, or travellers who share a lot of photos and video.

Argentina eSIM FAQs

Will my Argentina eSIM work in Patagonia?

You'll have coverage in Patagonian towns like El Calafate, Ushuaia, Bariloche and El Chaltén. Signal drops on hiking trails and remote stretches of the Ruta 40, so download offline maps before heading out. The main tourist infrastructure areas like Perito Moreno Glacier viewpoints have reliable signal.

How do I set up my Argentina eSIM?

After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings to install the eSIM profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land in Argentina, switch your data to the new eSIM line and you're connected.

Is an Argentina eSIM cheaper than roaming with my Australian carrier?

Significantly. Australian carriers charge steep daily rates for international roaming in South America. An Argentina eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily charges, no bill shock when you get home.

Can I make phone calls with an Argentina eSIM?

Our Argentina eSIM plans are data-only. For calls and texts, use WhatsApp, Messenger or FaceTime over your data connection. They work perfectly and are free. WhatsApp is the most widely used app in Argentina, so you'll get the most out of it for communicating with locals too.

Does my Argentina eSIM work in other South American countries?

Yes. Our South America eSIM covers six countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay. If your trip includes multiple South American destinations, you're covered on a single plan.

What happens if I run out of data in Argentina?

Simply purchase another eSIM online and install it on your device. It's delivered to your email instantly, so you can top up without visiting a shop or swapping any physical SIM cards.

Will my eSIM work at Iguazú Falls?

Yes. Iguazú Falls has good coverage on the Argentine side, including the main walkways and the Devil's Throat viewpoint. You'll stay connected for photos, navigation between trail circuits and checking boat tour schedules.

Planning a multi-country South American trip? Our South America eSIM covers Chile, Brazil and Peru on the same plan. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our Argentina SIM card is available for delivery before you fly.
