Connectivity along Chile's 4,300km stretch

Chile runs over 4,300 kilometres from north to south, and the connectivity experience changes as dramatically as the scenery. Here's what to expect from your eSIM as you travel through the country's distinct regions.

Santiago and the central valley

Santiago is a modern, well-connected city where your eSIM earns its keep immediately. Google Maps works well for navigating the metro system, and ride-hailing through Uber or local apps like Beat gets you around the sprawling city efficiently. The Barrio Lastarria, Bellavista and Providencia neighbourhoods are all walkable with live navigation.

The wineries of the Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua valleys are popular day trips from Santiago. Coverage is strong in the valley towns and along the main highways. Booking wine tours and tastings often happens through WhatsApp or direct messaging, so having your eSIM active makes organising these trips much smoother.

Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, about 90 minutes from Santiago, both have reliable coverage. Valparaíso's steep hills and maze-like cerros (hillside neighbourhoods) are much easier to navigate with Google Maps running. The funiculars and street art routes that make the city famous are best found with a live data connection.

The Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama is the gateway town for Chile's northern desert and it has solid coverage. You'll be connected for booking tours, checking weather conditions and coordinating transport. The town is small and walkable, but the attractions are spread across vast distances in the surrounding desert.

The main tourist sites like Valle de la Luna, El Tatio Geysers and the Salar de Atacama have variable coverage. You'll often lose signal on the drives between sites. Tour operators handle logistics, but download offline maps and save your tour confirmation details before heading out each morning.

The stargazing tours that the Atacama is famous for take place in dark-sky areas well outside town. You won't have signal there, but you won't need it. Just enjoy the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Lakes District and Chiloé

Puerto Varas, Pucón and the Lakes District towns have good coverage. This region is increasingly popular with Australian travellers for its combination of volcanoes, lakes and outdoor activities. Booking white-water rafting, volcano hikes and hot springs visits typically happens through local operators via WhatsApp or in-person.

Chiloé Island, reached by ferry from the mainland, has coverage in Castro and the main towns. The famous palafitos (stilted houses) and wooden churches are easy to find with navigation. More remote parts of the island and the smaller surrounding islands may have patchy signal.

The Carretera Austral, Chile's legendary road south from Puerto Montt, has increasingly good coverage in the towns along the route like Chaitén, Coyhaique and Chile Chico, but the stretches between them can be truly remote. Download offline maps for the entire Carretera before you start.

Patagonia and Torres del Paine

Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales both have solid coverage. Puerto Natales is the staging point for Torres del Paine National Park, and you'll use your data connection here to book tours, check weather forecasts and organise gear.

Inside Torres del Paine, coverage is limited. The main entrance and some refugios have intermittent signal, but the hiking trails themselves, including the famous W Trek, are largely off-grid. Download your trail maps, pack lists and refugio booking confirmations before entering the park. AllTrails and Maps.me both work offline.

Before you fly

  • Download offline maps for the Atacama and Patagonia. These are Chile's two most popular regions and both have significant areas without coverage. Save them in Google Maps before you leave Santiago.
  • Install WhatsApp before you arrive. Chile uses WhatsApp extensively for business communication. Tour operators, restaurants and accommodation providers all rely on it.
  • Download a Spanish language pack for Google Translate. English is less widely spoken outside Santiago's tourist areas. Camera translation helps with menus, signs and transport information.
  • Check Torres del Paine refugio bookings in advance. The W Trek refugios book out months ahead in peak season (November-March). Confirm your bookings and download all confirmation details before entering the park.
  • Bring layers and check weather forecasts daily. Chile's weather changes rapidly, especially in Patagonia. Having live weather data via your eSIM helps you plan each day's activities.

Chile eSIM data guide

Santiago is a high-data city with navigation, ride-hailing and messaging running constantly. The Atacama and Patagonia use less daily data since you'll be offline on tours and hikes, but you'll burn through data on town days when planning logistics and sharing photos.

  • 5GB suits a short Santiago city break of 3-5 days with light use.
  • 10-15GB is the sweet spot for a 10-14 day trip mixing Santiago with the Atacama or Patagonia.
  • 20GB suits extended trips covering multiple regions, or travellers who share lots of photos and video.
