Connectivity along Chile's 4,300km stretch

Chile is over 4,300 kilometres top to bottom, and your phone's experience changes almost as much as the landscape does.

Santiago and the central valley

Santiago is well-covered and easy to handle on your phone. Maps takes care of the metro, and Uber or Beat take care of the longer crosstown trips. The barrios you're most likely to stay in (Lastarria, Bellavista, Providencia) are walkable with live navigation running.

The wineries of the Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua valleys are popular day trips from Santiago. Coverage is strong in the valley towns and along the main highways. Booking wine tours and tastings often happens through WhatsApp or direct messaging, so having your eSIM active makes organising these trips much smoother.

Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, about 90 minutes from Santiago, both have reliable coverage. Valparaíso's steep hills and maze-like cerros (hillside neighbourhoods) are much easier to navigate with Google Maps running. The funiculars and street art routes that make the city famous are best found with a live data connection.

The Atacama Desert

San Pedro de Atacama is the gateway town for Chile's northern desert and it has solid coverage. You'll have signal for tour bookings and weather checks. The town is small and walkable, but the attractions are spread across vast distances in the surrounding desert.

The main tourist sites like Valle de la Luna, El Tatio Geysers and the Salar de Atacama have variable coverage. You'll often lose signal on the drives between sites. Tour operators handle logistics, but download offline maps and save your tour confirmation details before heading out each morning.

The stargazing tours run from dark-sky sites well outside San Pedro. You won't have signal out there, but the whole point is to leave the screens behind anyway. The skies do most of the talking.

The Lakes District and Chiloé

Puerto Varas, Pucón and the Lakes District towns have good coverage. It's a popular pick for Australian travellers after volcano country and lake towns. Booking white-water rafting, volcano hikes and hot springs visits typically happens through local operators via WhatsApp or in-person.

Chiloé Island, reached by ferry from the mainland, has coverage in Castro and the main towns. The famous palafitos (stilted houses) and wooden churches are easy to find with navigation. More remote parts of the island and the smaller surrounding islands may have patchy signal.

The Carretera Austral, the road south from Puerto Montt, has reasonable coverage in the towns (Chaitén, Coyhaique, Chile Chico) but the stretches between them are properly remote. Download offline maps for the full route before you set off.

Patagonia and Torres del Paine

Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales both have solid coverage. Puerto Natales is the staging point for Torres del Paine National Park. Use your data here for park bookings and weather checks before you head in.

Inside Torres del Paine, coverage is limited. The main entrance and some refugios have intermittent signal, but the hiking trails themselves, including the famous W Trek, are largely off-grid. Download your trail maps, pack lists and refugio booking confirmations before entering the park. AllTrails and Maps.me both work offline.

Before you fly

A few things worth doing before you fly:

  • Save offline Google Maps for the Atacama and Patagonia. Both have wide stretches without signal.
  • Install WhatsApp. Chilean tour operators and accommodation hosts overwhelmingly use it.
  • Download the Spanish language pack in Google Translate. English drops off quickly outside Santiago.
  • Confirm your refugio bookings for the W Trek. November to March books out months ahead, and you'll want the confirmations saved on your phone.
  • Pack layers and check forecasts daily, especially in Patagonia. Live weather data is one of the things you'll use your eSIM for the most.

Chile eSIM data guide

Santiago chews through data: Maps, Uber and WhatsApp running all day. The Atacama and Patagonia drop the daily total because you're often offline on tours or trails, but town days spike when you catch up on logistics and uploads.

  • 5GB covers a short Santiago trip of 3 to 5 days.
  • 10 to 15GB suits a 10 to 14 day trip mixing Santiago with the Atacama or Patagonia.
  • 20GB makes more sense for longer trips covering multiple regions, or anyone sharing a lot of photos and video.
