Staying connected across the Maldives

The Maldives is unlike most travel destinations. Rather than cities and towns, you're dealing with a chain of 1,200 islands spread across 26 atolls. Your connectivity options depend almost entirely on which resort or guesthouse island you're staying on.

Resort islands

Most resorts in the Maldives provide Wi-Fi as part of your stay or as an add-on. The quality varies significantly between properties. Higher-end resorts in North and South Male Atoll, Baa Atoll and Ari Atoll generally have stronger and more reliable connections. Budget-friendly guesthouses on local islands may have slower or less consistent Wi-Fi.

For resorts closer to Male, the capital, signal strength from local mobile towers is typically stronger. Resorts on more remote atolls like Laamu, Haa Alifu or Addu may rely more heavily on satellite-based connections, which can be slower.

Male and Hulhumale

Male, the capital, has strong mobile coverage across the island. If you have a layover or are spending a night before transferring to your resort, you'll have reliable connectivity for navigation, messaging and booking confirmations. Hulhumale, the reclaimed island near the airport where many travellers stay before domestic transfers, also has good coverage.

Velana International Airport has Wi-Fi available in the terminal. Your domestic transfer (speedboat or seaplane) booking confirmations, resort check-in details and travel insurance documents are all worth having accessible before you leave the airport area.

Guesthouse islands

Local islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah and Fulidhoo have become popular alternatives to resort stays. These islands have mobile coverage from Dhiraagu and Ooredoo (the two main Maldivian carriers). Coverage on local islands is generally good for browsing, messaging and social media.

Having mobile data on a guesthouse island makes a real difference for booking excursions, finding restaurants and communicating with dive operators and tour guides. Many local businesses use WhatsApp and Viber for bookings and confirmations.

Excursions and water activities

Once you're out on the water for snorkelling, diving or sandbank trips, don't expect mobile coverage. Most excursion boats are away from tower range. This is worth knowing if you're relying on your phone for anything during a day trip.

Underwater cameras and GoPros are the go-to for capturing these moments rather than phones. Save your data-heavy sharing for when you're back at the resort or guesthouse.

Before you fly

  • Download offline maps of Male and your resort atoll. Mobile data availability varies, so having Google Maps cached for your area helps with navigation on local islands.
  • Save your resort and transfer booking confirmations offline. Seaplane and speedboat transfers can be confusing. Having your confirmation details available without data means you won't be scrambling at the airport.
  • Download WhatsApp and Viber. Both are widely used in the Maldives for communicating with resorts, guesthouse hosts, dive operators and tour companies.
  • Check your resort's Wi-Fi policy before you arrive. Some resorts include Wi-Fi, some charge extra, and speeds vary. Knowing this in advance helps you plan your connectivity.
  • Keep your Aussie SIM active for banking codes. If you do get a local SIM or use resort Wi-Fi, your Australian number still needs to receive verification codes. Keep mobile data off on your Aussie SIM to avoid roaming charges.

When will Maldives eSIM plans be available

We're actively working on adding Maldives eSIM plans to our range. Once available, they'll work like our other travel eSIMs: purchase online, scan a QR code to install on your device and activate when you arrive. No SIM swapping, no airport queues.

In the meantime, if you're island-hopping across Asia, our Asia eSIM covers 13 countries on a single plan. It doesn't currently include the Maldives, but it's worth considering if the Maldives is part of a broader trip.

Maldives connectivity FAQs

Will there be eSIM coverage across all atolls?

When Maldives eSIM plans become available, coverage will depend on the local carrier networks. Male, Hulhumale and popular resort and guesthouse islands have mobile coverage. More remote atolls may have weaker or no signal.

Do all apps work normally in the Maldives?

Yes. The Maldives has no internet restrictions for tourists. Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and all other apps work normally when you have a connection.

Is resort Wi-Fi good enough for video calls?

It depends on the resort. Some high-end properties have strong, reliable Wi-Fi. Others, particularly on remote atolls, may have slower speeds that struggle with video calls. Check with your resort before relying on it for work calls or streaming.

How do I set up an eSIM?

Once Maldives eSIM plans are available, you'll receive an email with a QR code after purchase. Scan it on your unlocked, eSIM-compatible device to install the profile. You can do this at home before your trip.

What's cheaper: resort Wi-Fi or a travel eSIM?

Resort Wi-Fi add-ons can be expensive, particularly at premium properties. A travel eSIM will likely be a more affordable option once available, with a flat prepaid cost and no per-day charges.

Can I buy a local SIM card in the Maldives?

Yes. Dhiraagu and Ooredoo sell tourist SIM cards at Velana International Airport. This requires your passport and a short registration process. Once our Maldives eSIM plans launch, this won't be necessary.

What messaging apps are popular in the Maldives?

WhatsApp and Viber are the most widely used messaging apps in the Maldives. Local businesses, tour operators and guesthouse hosts commonly communicate through both. Facebook Messenger is also popular.

Planning a trip to Asia as well? Our Singapore eSIM plans are popular for stopovers. We also have a Sri Lanka eSIM for Colombo and the hill country, an India eSIM for Delhi, Mumbai and beyond, and an Asia eSIM covering 13 countries on a single plan.
