Which Canada Digital SIM plan suits your trip
Canada attracts different types of Australian travellers, from ski trippers hitting Whistler to families doing the Rockies road trip to business travellers in Toronto. The right eSIM plan depends on how you're travelling and what you need from your connection.
The ski and snowboard trip
If you're heading to Whistler, Banff, Lake Louise or Big White, you'll want reliable data for checking lift status apps, weather forecasts and resort maps. Whistler Village and Banff townsite both have strong coverage. On the mountain, coverage varies by resort but you'll generally have signal at base areas, lodges and main chairlift stations.
The USA T-Mobile plan is ideal if your ski trip includes a stopover in the US. Many Australians fly through Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle en route to Canadian ski resorts. Unlimited data and calls means you're covered from the moment you land in the US through your entire Canadian ski holiday.
For a Canada-only ski trip, the data-only USA/Canada/Mexico or USA/Alaska/Canada plans work well. You'll use data for navigation, weather apps and sharing photos, but ski resorts tend to have good Wi-Fi at lodges and hotels for heavier downloads.
The road trip through the Rockies
The drive between Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper and back is one of the great road trips in the world. Google Maps works well for routing and you'll want it live for real-time traffic updates, especially on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Icefields Parkway.
Coverage on the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper is patchy in places. You'll have signal at Columbia Icefield and the main pullover points, but stretches between them can drop out. Download the offline map for this corridor before you leave your hotel in Banff or Lake Louise.
Jasper, Canmore and Golden all have solid coverage. If you're extending your trip to Vancouver or Victoria, the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler has good coverage along most of the route.
The city break: Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal
Canadian cities are excellent for mobile data users. Toronto's TTC transit system, Vancouver's SkyTrain and Montréal's STM metro all work well with Google Maps for navigation. Uber and Lyft operate in all three cities.
If your trip is business-focused, with conferences in Toronto and meetings in Vancouver, the USA T-Mobile plan with unlimited data and calls is the strongest option. You'll have a local number for making and receiving calls, which is useful for booking restaurants, contacting hotels and calling business contacts.
For a leisure city break, the data-only plans provide everything you need for navigation, messaging and photo sharing at a lower cost.
The cross-border trip (Canada + USA)
Many Australian trips combine Canada and the USA. Think Vancouver and Seattle, Niagara Falls from Toronto, or a broader North American circuit. All three of our eSIM plans cover both countries, so you won't need separate plans or worry about coverage changing at the border.
The USA T-Mobile plan is the best fit for cross-border trips since it includes unlimited data and calls in both countries. The data-only plans also work seamlessly across the border.
Before you fly
- Download Google Maps offline for the Rockies. The Icefields Parkway and remote mountain roads have patchy coverage. Save the corridor from Banff to Jasper before you head out.
- Install Uber or Lyft before arriving. Both work in Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal. In smaller cities, you may need local taxi apps.
- Check if you need a Canada eTA. Australian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization for Canada. Apply online before your trip. You'll need your phone data to access the confirmation if asked at the border.
- Download a currency converter app. Canadian and US dollars are different values. A live converter helps you keep track, especially on cross-border trips.
- Set up contactless payments. Apple Pay and Google Pay work widely across Canada. Having your cards loaded means less fumbling at Tim Hortons drive-throughs and transit tap points.
Canada eSIM data guide
Canadian cities are high-data environments with navigation, ride-hailing and photo sharing all running constantly. Road trips use less data between towns but spike when you're in coverage and uploading photos or checking routes.
- 5GB suits a short city break of 3-5 days with light use.
- 10-20GB covers a 7-14 day trip mixing cities with a Rockies road trip.
- 30-50GB or unlimited suits extended trips, cross-border travel or travellers who rely heavily on video calls and streaming.
Canada eSIM FAQs
Which eSIM plan is best for a Canada-only trip?
For a data-only trip, the USA/Canada/Mexico plan (5GB-50GB) or USA/Alaska/Canada plan (5GB-30GB) are both excellent choices. If you need calls and texts for business or booking restaurants by phone, the USA T-Mobile plan offers unlimited data and calls across Canada, the USA and Mexico.
Will my Canada eSIM work in the Rocky Mountains?
Yes. Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, Canmore and all major Rockies towns have solid coverage. The Icefields Parkway has patchy coverage between main stops, so download offline maps for that stretch. You'll have signal at Columbia Icefield and the main viewpoints.
Does my Canada eSIM also work in the USA?
Yes. All three of our Canada eSIM plans cover both Canada and the USA. The USA T-Mobile plan also includes Mexico. You won't need a separate plan if your trip crosses the border.
Can I make phone calls with a Canada eSIM?
The USA T-Mobile plan includes unlimited calls and texts. Our other two plans (USA/Canada/Mexico and USA/Alaska/Canada) are data-only. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger for voice and video calls over your data connection.
How do I set up my Canada eSIM?
After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings to install the eSIM profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land in Canada, switch your data to the new eSIM line and you're connected.
Is a Canada eSIM cheaper than roaming with my Australian carrier?
Significantly. Australian carriers charge steep daily rates for international roaming in North America. A Canada eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily charges, no bill shock when you get home.
Will my eSIM work on a ski trip to Whistler or Banff?
Yes. Whistler Village, Banff townsite and all major ski resort base areas have reliable coverage. On-mountain coverage varies but you'll generally have signal at lodges, base areas and main chairlift stations. Download resort maps and weather apps for offline use as backup.
Planning a cross-border trip? Our Canada eSIM plans also cover the United States and Hawaii. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our Canada SIM card is available for delivery before you fly.
