Which Hawaii eSIM plan suits your trip
Hawaii draws different types of Australian travellers: honeymooners on Maui, families in Waikiki, surfers on Oahu's North Shore, hikers exploring the Big Island's volcanoes. The right eSIM plan depends on your island itinerary and how you use your phone.
The resort and beach holiday
If you're based in Waikiki, Ka'anapali, Wailea or any of Hawaii's main resort areas, you'll have excellent coverage everywhere. These areas are well-connected and you'll use data for restaurant bookings, beach directions, snorkelling tour reservations and sharing sunset photos.
The data-only plans are a solid fit for resort-based trips. You'll have Wi-Fi at your hotel for heavy downloads and streaming, and your eSIM covers everything you need when you're out exploring: navigation, messaging, Uber and photo sharing.
For couples and families who want the simplicity of making phone calls to book restaurants, confirm tours or contact their hotel, the USA T-Mobile plan with unlimited calls is worth the upgrade. Having a working phone number in Hawaii means you can call local businesses directly instead of navigating websites or waiting for WhatsApp replies.
The multi-island adventure
Island-hopping is one of the best ways to experience Hawaii, and your eSIM works seamlessly across all the main islands: Oahu, Maui, Big Island (Hawaii Island), Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Coverage is consistent across all of them in towns and resort areas.
Inter-island flights are short (30-45 minutes) and you'll want data for checking flight status, digital boarding passes and coordinating transport on arrival. Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Hawaii are the main carriers. Having your eSIM active means you can confirm bookings, check in online and access your boarding pass without hunting for airport Wi-Fi.
If you're combining Hawaii with a US mainland stopover, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Las Vegas are common transit points for Australian travellers. All three plans cover the mainland too. No need for a separate eSIM.
The outdoor and adventure trip
Hawaii's hiking, surfing and outdoor scene is world-class, but coverage patterns vary once you leave the towns.
On Oahu, popular hikes like Diamond Head and Manoa Falls have coverage. The North Shore surf beaches like Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay all have good signal.
On Maui, the Road to Hana is the big one. Coverage is good for the first half of the drive but becomes patchy past Hana town, especially on the backside road around the south. Download offline maps for the entire route before you leave Kahului. Haleakalā summit has intermittent coverage, enough for a photo upload on a good day, but don't count on it.
On the Big Island, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has coverage at the visitor centre and along Chain of Craters Road, but signal drops in more remote areas of the park. Mauna Kea's summit road has patchy coverage. Kona and Hilo both have solid signal.
On Kauai, the Nā Pali Coast is largely off-grid whether you're hiking the Kalalau Trail or taking a boat tour. Waimea Canyon has coverage at the main lookouts. Poʻipu and Princeville/Hanalei have reliable coverage.
Before you fly
- Download offline maps for the Road to Hana. Coverage drops past Hana town. Save the entire Maui east coast route in Google Maps before you start driving.
- Download offline maps for hiking trails. Diamond Head, Kalalau Trail, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes. Save trail maps before you head out. AllTrails works well offline.
- Install Uber before arriving. Uber operates on Oahu (strong coverage) and Maui (limited). On the Big Island and Kauai, you'll rely more on rental cars.
- Set up mobile boarding passes. Inter-island flights are quick and digital boarding passes on your phone save time. Make sure your eSIM is active for check-in.
- Check your ESTA before you fly. Australian passport holders need an Electronic System for Travel Authorization for Hawaii (it's a US state). Apply online at least 72 hours before departure.
Hawaii eSIM data guide
Hawaii resort areas are moderate-data environments. You'll use data for navigation, photo sharing and restaurant lookups, but hotel Wi-Fi handles streaming and large uploads. Multi-island trips use more data with flight check-ins, navigation on each island and heavier photo sharing.
- 5GB suits a short Waikiki resort stay of 3-5 days with hotel Wi-Fi for heavy use.
- 10-30GB covers a 7-14 day multi-island trip with regular photo sharing and navigation.
- 30-50GB or unlimited suits extended stays, heavy social media use or travellers without reliable hotel Wi-Fi.
Hawaii eSIM FAQs
Does my Hawaii eSIM work on all the islands?
Yes. Your eSIM works across all Hawaiian islands including Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Coverage is strong in towns and resort areas on all islands. Remote hiking trails and the backside of Maui's Road to Hana may have patchy signal.
Will my eSIM work on the Road to Hana?
Coverage is good for the first half of the drive from Kahului. Past Hana town, signal becomes patchy, especially on the backside road. Download offline maps for the entire route before you start.
Can I make phone calls with a Hawaii eSIM?
The USA T-Mobile plan includes unlimited calls and texts. Our other two plans are data-only. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger for voice and video calls over your data connection.
Does my Hawaii eSIM also work on the US mainland?
Yes. All three plans cover the entire United States including Hawaii. If your trip includes a stopover in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas or anywhere else on the mainland, you're covered on the same plan.
How do I set up my Hawaii eSIM?
After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings to install the eSIM profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land in Hawaii, switch your data to the new eSIM line and you're connected.
Is a Hawaii eSIM cheaper than roaming with my Australian carrier?
Significantly. Australian carriers charge steep daily rates for international roaming. A Hawaii eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily charges, no bill shock when you get home.
Will my eSIM work at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?
Yes. The visitor centre and Chain of Craters Road have coverage. More remote areas of the park may have intermittent signal. Download offline maps and park information before entering.
Combining Hawaii with the US mainland? Our plans also cover the United States and Canada. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our Hawaii SIM card is available for delivery before you fly.
