Where your Hong Kong Digital SIM keeps you connected

Hong Kong is one of the most connected cities on earth. Mobile coverage is excellent across the entire territory, including inside MTR tunnels, on ferries and in high-rise buildings. Your eSIM works everywhere you'll go, from the busiest shopping districts to the quieter outlying islands.

Hong Kong Island

Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and the Mid-Levels all have rock-solid coverage. Your Hong Kong eSIM keeps Google Maps running as you navigate the maze of elevated walkways connecting Central's office towers, or find your way through the backstreets of Sheung Wan looking for the best egg tart shop.

The Peak Tram, Victoria Peak lookout and the hiking trails along the Morning Trail and Lugard Road all have coverage. You can share photos from the summit without waiting to get back to sea level. Aberdeen, Stanley Market and the southern beaches at Repulse Bay and Shek O are equally well covered.

For getting around, the Octopus card app on your phone handles MTR fares, buses, ferries, convenience stores and most restaurants. Your eSIM provides the data connection it needs to stay updated.

Kowloon

Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po all have excellent signal. Your eSIM keeps navigation running through Mong Kok's packed market streets and the sprawling Temple Street Night Market where getting turned around is half the experience.

The Star Ferry terminal, the Avenue of Stars along the harbourfront and the Cultural Centre area are all well covered. For food, your eSIM handles restaurant searches and queue-tracking apps in the Michelin-dense streets around Yau Ma Tei and Jordan.

Kowloon Tong, Diamond Hill and the Wong Tai Sin Temple area have strong coverage. The Nan Lian Garden and Chi Lin Nunnery are both fully connected, so you can look up the history of what you're seeing as you walk through.

New Territories and outlying islands

The New Territories stretch from urban Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan up to the rural villages near the Chinese border. Coverage is strong throughout the built-up areas and along the main hiking routes, including the popular MacLehose Trail sections near Sai Kung.

Lantau Island has excellent coverage in Tung Chung, at the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, the Big Buddha and Tai O fishing village. The airport is on Lantau, so you'll have signal the moment you step off the plane.

Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, popular day-trip destinations, have solid coverage across their main villages, beaches and walking paths. The ferries from Central to these islands also maintain signal throughout the crossing.

For the more remote hiking areas in the northeastern New Territories or the outer reaches of Sai Kung, coverage can thin on some trails, but you'll have signal at trailheads, villages and anywhere near a road.

Before you fly

  • Download the MTR app or CityMapper. Hong Kong's MTR system is fast and covers the whole territory. Live data from your eSIM shows you real-time routes, exit information and walking directions from the station to your destination.
  • Get the Octopus card app set up. The Octopus card is Hong Kong's transit and payment card. The app version works on most recent iPhones and Android devices. Your eSIM data keeps it synced.
  • Save offline maps of hiking areas. Urban Hong Kong has blanket coverage, but some remote trail sections in the New Territories can drop signal. Download the areas around Sai Kung and MacLehose Trail before heading out.
  • Keep your Aussie SIM active for banking codes. Your Hong Kong eSIM runs alongside your existing Australian number on most phones. Switch your Aussie SIM's mobile data off to avoid roaming charges.

How much Hong Kong eSIM data do you need

Hong Kong is a moderate data destination. The city is compact and most trips are short, but you'll use data constantly for navigation, payments, restaurant searches and messaging.

  • 5GB covers a 3-5 day trip with standard browsing, messaging and navigation.
  • 10-15GB suits a 1-2 week stay, including photo sharing, video calls home and heavier app usage.
  • 20GB+ is best for longer stays or anyone combining Hong Kong with mainland China and Macau on a regional plan.

Hong Kong eSIM FAQs

Do all the usual apps work in Hong Kong?

Yes. Unlike mainland China, Hong Kong has no internet restrictions. Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and all other apps work normally with your Hong Kong eSIM.

Can I use my Hong Kong eSIM in mainland China and Macau?

If you purchased the China, Hong Kong, Macau eSIM plan, yes. It covers all three regions on one plan. Keep in mind that mainland China has internet restrictions on apps like Google and WhatsApp, even though they work normally in Hong Kong and Macau.

Will my eSIM work in the MTR tunnels?

Yes. Hong Kong's MTR system has full mobile coverage inside tunnels and underground stations. Your eSIM stays connected throughout your journey, including on the Airport Express.

How do I set up my Hong Kong eSIM?

After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it on your unlocked, eSIM-compatible device to install the profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land at HKIA, switch your data to the eSIM line and you're connected.

Is a Hong Kong eSIM cheaper than roaming?

Much cheaper. Australian carriers charge daily rates for international roaming that add up quickly. A Hong Kong eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily fees, no bill shock.

Can I make phone calls with a Hong Kong eSIM?

Our Hong Kong eSIM plans are data-only. For calls and texts, use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger over your eSIM data connection. These all work without restriction in Hong Kong.

Should I get a Hong Kong eSIM or an Asia eSIM?

If Hong Kong is your only stop, a dedicated plan works well. If you're continuing to Japan, Singapore, Thailand or other Asian destinations, our Asia eSIM covers 13 countries on one plan. Check the coverage list to confirm your destinations are included.

Heading to mainland China as well? Our China eSIM plans cover Beijing, Shanghai and beyond, or grab the China, Hong Kong, Macau plan to cover all three regions. We also have a Japan eSIM for Tokyo and Osaka, a Singapore eSIM and an Asia eSIM covering 13 countries on a single plan. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our Hong Kong SIM card ships to your door before you fly.
