Staying connected across the Indonesian archipelago
Indonesia stretches across more than 17,000 islands. The ones travellers visit have solid mobile coverage, but knowing where signal is strong and where it thins out makes a difference. Your Indonesia eSIM keeps ride-hailing apps, navigation and WhatsApp running wherever you go. Here's how connectivity works across the main regions.
Bali and the Nusa Islands
Bali has strong coverage from Seminyak and Kuta through to Ubud, the Bukit Peninsula and the east coast around Amed. Your Indonesia eSIM keeps Grab and Gojek running for rides, Google Maps live for navigating Bali's one-way streets and WhatsApp ready for confirming villa bookings and restaurant reservations.
The Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan) have coverage in the main village areas and along the coasts. Signal can thin out on Nusa Penida's clifftop roads and more remote western beaches, but you'll reconnect quickly when you head back towards the ferry port or main strips.
Grab is the go-to ride-hailing app across Bali. It handles motorbike taxis, cars and food delivery. Gojek is the local alternative and works just as well. Both need a live data connection from your Indonesia eSIM.
Java and the cultural heartland
Jakarta's coverage is as strong as you'd expect from a megacity. Getting around Jakarta without Grab or Gojek is genuinely difficult. Traffic is intense and the apps are how both locals and visitors move around the city. TransJakarta bus routes are also easy to navigate with Google Maps and a live data connection.
Yogyakarta is the cultural hub of Java. Coverage is strong across the city and at major sites including Borobudur and Prambanan. The area around Mount Merapi has coverage at the main access points but signal thins on the upper slopes. If you're doing a sunrise Jeep tour, you'll have signal at the meeting point and throughout most of the drive.
Surabaya, Mount Bromo and the Ijen Crater are all well served. Bromo's viewpoints and the Jeep tour areas have solid coverage. Ijen's trailhead and lower sections have signal, though it drops on the descent to the crater lake.
Lombok, the Gilis and eastern islands
Lombok has strong coverage in Mataram, Senggigi and Kuta Lombok. The Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) all have coverage, though speeds can slow during peak season when the islands are busy.
If you're heading further east to Flores for the Komodo National Park boat trips, Labuan Bajo has solid coverage. Signal on the boats between islands varies, but you'll have connectivity at anchor points and on Rinca and Komodo islands near the ranger stations. The overland drive from Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu's coloured lakes takes you through areas with patchier coverage, so download offline maps for that stretch.
Raja Ampat in West Papua has coverage in Sorong and at some of the larger homestay areas, but it's one of the more remote destinations in Indonesia. Don't count on consistent signal between islands there.
For most phones, your Australian SIM stays active alongside your Indonesia eSIM for banking codes and verification messages. Just switch its mobile data off to avoid roaming charges.
Before you fly
- Download Grab and Gojek before you arrive. They're essential for getting around Indonesian cities and Bali. Both handle motorbike taxis, cars and food delivery. Your Indonesia eSIM keeps them connected everywhere.
- Save offline Google Maps for island-hopping routes. Coverage is strong in towns and tourist hubs but can drop on remote coastal roads, boat crossings and highland drives.
- Book ferries and domestic flights with a data connection. Traveloka is widely used in Indonesia for transport and accommodation. Having live data means you can compare and book on the move.
- Keep your Aussie SIM active for banking codes. Your Indonesia eSIM runs alongside your existing Australian number on most phones. Switch your Aussie SIM's mobile data off to avoid roaming charges.
How much Indonesia eSIM data do you need
Bali and Java are high-data destinations. Between ride-hailing apps, navigation, photo sharing and booking platforms, you'll burn through more data in a city like Jakarta or on a busy Bali day than on a quiet beach in Lombok.
- 5GB covers a short 3-5 day Bali trip staying in one area.
- 10-20GB is the sweet spot for a 1-2 week trip across multiple islands.
- 30GB+ or unlimited suits extended stays, remote workers or anyone sharing lots of photos and video.
Indonesia eSIM FAQs
Will my Indonesia eSIM work outside Bali?
Yes. Coverage extends across Java, Lombok, the Gili Islands, Flores, Sulawesi and most populated areas of the archipelago. Major cities and tourist destinations have strong coverage. More remote areas like Raja Ampat or inland Kalimantan may have weaker signal in places, but you'll be connected in all main towns and transport hubs.
Do I need Grab or Gojek in Indonesia?
Strongly recommended. These ride-hailing apps are the easiest and most affordable way to get around Indonesian cities and Bali. They handle motorbike taxis, cars, food delivery and even payments. Both need a live data connection from your Indonesia eSIM to function.
Can I use the same eSIM for Bali and other Indonesian islands?
Yes. Your Indonesia eSIM covers the entire country, not just Bali. Whether you're island-hopping to Lombok, exploring Java or diving in Komodo, the same eSIM works across all of Indonesia.
How do I set up my Indonesia eSIM?
After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings to install the eSIM profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land in Indonesia, switch your data to the new eSIM line and you're connected.
Is an Indonesia eSIM cheaper than roaming with my Australian carrier?
Significantly. Australian carriers charge steep daily rates for international roaming. An Indonesia eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily charges, no bill shock when you get home.
Can I make phone calls with an Indonesia eSIM?
Our Indonesia eSIM plans are data-only. For calls and texts, use WhatsApp, Grab's in-app calling, Messenger or FaceTime over your eSIM data connection. They work perfectly and are free. WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app in Indonesia.
Can I use my Indonesia eSIM in other Asian countries?
If you purchased a regional Southeast Asia or Asia eSIM plan, yes. The Southeast Asia eSIM covers 4 countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The Asia eSIM covers 13 countries. If you purchased a dedicated Indonesia-only plan, it covers Indonesia only.
Visiting Thailand after Indonesia? Our Thailand eSIM plans keep you connected from Bangkok to the islands. We also have Malaysia eSIM plans for Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, a Singapore eSIM for stopovers and an Asia eSIM covering 13 countries on a single plan. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our Indonesia SIM card is available for delivery before you fly.
