Where your Laos Digital SIM keeps you connected
Laos is a long, narrow country and most travellers follow a well-worn route from north to south (or vice versa). Mobile coverage is strongest in the cities and main tourist towns, with signal thinning in the more remote mountainous areas. Here's what to expect across the main regions.
Vientiane
The capital has strong coverage across the entire city. Your Laos eSIM keeps Google Maps running between Pha That Luang, Patuxai and the riverside restaurants along the Mekong. Vientiane is compact and walkable, but having a data connection helps with restaurant recommendations, tuk-tuk negotiations and finding your way through the quieter residential streets.
The COPE Visitor Centre, Buddha Park and the morning markets are all well covered. If you're crossing the Friendship Bridge to Nong Khai in Thailand, your Laos eSIM covers the Lao side of the border area.
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is the most visited town in Laos and has solid coverage throughout the main area. Your eSIM handles navigation between the night market, the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong and the dozens of temples lining the peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers.
Kuang Si Falls, about 30 kilometres south of town, has coverage at the main waterfall area and along the access road. The Pak Ou Caves boat trip maintains signal for most of the river journey from Luang Prabang, though it can drop in the more remote stretches. For the alms-giving ceremony at dawn, your eSIM lets you check the timing and location without relying on hotel Wi-Fi the night before.
Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng has coverage across the main town area. Your eSIM keeps maps and messaging running as you explore the karst landscape, Blue Lagoons and cave systems. The main tourist strip and surrounding guesthouses all have good signal.
For activities like tubing on the Nam Song River or kayaking trips, signal can be patchy once you're away from the town centre. The main viewpoints and hiking trails close to town maintain coverage, but expect weaker signal on longer treks into the surrounding mountains.
The south and 4,000 Islands
Pakse has solid coverage as the main gateway to southern Laos. From there, the Bolaven Plateau's main coffee villages and waterfall stops have coverage along the main loop road, though signal can thin between stops.
Don Det and Don Khon in the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) have coverage in the main village areas and along the popular cycling routes. The Mekong-side guesthouses generally have good signal. Li Phi Falls and Khone Phapheng Falls are both within coverage range. Signal is weaker on the smaller, less-visited islands.
Before you fly
- Download Google Maps with Laos offline maps. Coverage is good in towns but drops between them. Offline maps keep navigation working on long bus rides through the mountains.
- Download Google Translate with the Lao language pack. English signage is limited outside the main tourist areas. The camera translation feature helps with menus and signs.
- Get the Bookaway or 12Go app for transport bookings. Internal transport in Laos (minivans, buses, slow boats) can be tricky to book. These apps show routes and allow advance booking with your eSIM data.
- Keep your Aussie SIM active for banking codes. Your Laos eSIM runs alongside your existing Australian number. Switch your Aussie SIM's mobile data off to avoid roaming charges.
How much Laos eSIM data do you need
Laos is a low-to-moderate data destination. Most travellers use data for navigation, messaging and booking transport. Streaming and video calls are less common given the pace of travel here.
- 5GB covers a short 3-5 day trip to one or two destinations with standard browsing and messaging.
- 10GB suits a 1-2 week trip through the main route (Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang) with daily navigation and social media.
- 30GB is best for longer stays or heavier usage including photo sharing and video calls back home.
Laos eSIM FAQs
How good is mobile coverage in Laos?
Coverage is strong in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Pakse. Between cities, signal can drop on mountain roads and in very remote areas. The main tourist route has good coverage for most of the journey.
Do all apps work normally in Laos?
Yes. Laos has no internet restrictions. Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and all other apps work normally with your Laos eSIM.
Can I use my Laos eSIM in other countries?
The Laos eSIM covers Laos only. If you're travelling to multiple countries, our Asia eSIM covers 13 Asian destinations on a single plan including Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
How do I set up my Laos eSIM?
After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it on your unlocked, eSIM-compatible device to install the profile. You can do this at home in Australia before your trip. When you arrive in Laos, switch your data to the eSIM line and you're connected.
Is a Laos eSIM cheaper than roaming?
Significantly. Australian carriers charge high daily rates for roaming in Laos. A Laos eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost with no surprise charges. You know what you're paying before you leave.
Can I make phone calls with a Laos eSIM?
Our Laos eSIM plans are data-only. For calls and texts, use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger over your eSIM data connection. These all work well on Lao networks.
What messaging apps do locals use in Laos?
WhatsApp is widely used among travellers in Laos. Locals also use LINE and Facebook Messenger. Having one or more of these installed means you can communicate with guesthouses, tour operators and other travellers easily.
Exploring more of Southeast Asia? Our Thailand eSIM plans cover Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands.
