How your Seoul eSIM powers your trip

Seoul runs on technology. From the subway system to street food ordering to K-beauty shopping, your phone is your most useful travel tool in this city. Here's how your eSIM fits into the real experience of exploring Seoul.

Getting around Seoul's metro and beyond

Seoul's metro system is one of the best in the world: clean, efficient, extensive and cheap. Google Maps works well for routing, but Naver Map and KakaoMap are the local apps that handle Korean addresses and transit routing even better. Both are available in English and give more accurate walking directions in Seoul's dense urban grid.

The T-money card is Seoul's transit payment system and works on the metro, buses and even taxis. You can buy one at any convenience store for around 4,000 won. Having your eSIM active means you can check routes, departure times and transfer options in real time as you navigate the network.

KakaoTaxi is South Korea's dominant ride-hailing app. Uber has limited availability in Seoul, so KakaoTaxi is the one to install. It works smoothly with a data connection and is the easiest way to get around at night or between areas not well-served by metro.

K-food, street food and restaurant culture

Seoul's food scene is a major reason Australian travellers visit. From the street food stalls of Gwangjang Market and Myeongdong to the barbecue restaurants of Mapo-gu and the fine dining of Gangnam, you'll use your phone constantly for finding restaurants, reading reviews and translating menus.

Google Translate's camera feature reads Korean text in real time and is essential for menus at local restaurants that don't have English options. Download the Korean language pack before your trip. Many Korean restaurants use tablet-based ordering systems that are Korean-only, so having a live translation tool on your phone helps you navigate these.

Naver and Kakao are more widely used than Google for restaurant searches in Korea. Naver Map shows restaurant ratings, photos and opening hours that Google sometimes misses. Having data to access both gives you the fullest picture.

Shopping districts and K-beauty

Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Garosu-gil are Seoul's main shopping districts, and each has its own character. You'll use data for price comparisons, finding specific stores, checking product reviews and navigating between floors in massive department stores like Lotte and Shinsegae.

Duty-free shopping is a big draw for international visitors. Lotte Duty Free and Shilla Duty Free have apps that let you pre-order items for airport pickup. Having your eSIM connected means you can browse deals and place orders throughout your trip.

K-beauty shopping in Myeongdong is best done with a translation app running. Product labels are in Korean and staff don't always speak English. Camera translation helps you check ingredients and product descriptions.

K-culture: K-pop, palaces and nightlife

Seoul's cultural attractions range from ancient palaces to cutting-edge K-pop experiences. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces have full coverage and you'll want data for audio guides, historical information and the hanbok rental shops nearby.

K-pop fans will use data for finding fan merchandise stores in Myeongdong and Hongdae, checking show schedules at HYBE Insight or SM Town, and navigating to recording studio locations. Live streaming and social media posting from Seoul is a big part of the K-pop fan experience.

Hongdae's nightlife district is best navigated with a live data connection. Finding specific bars, clubs and live music venues in the maze of backstreets is much easier with Google Maps or KakaoMap running.

Before you fly

  • Download Naver Map and KakaoMap. These work better than Google Maps for Korean addresses, transit routing and restaurant searches. Both have English language options.
  • Install KakaoTaxi before arriving. This is Seoul's main ride-hailing app. Uber has limited availability. Set it up with your phone number before you fly.
  • Download the Korean language pack for Google Translate. Camera translation reads menus, product labels and signs in real time. Essential for restaurants and shopping.
  • Get a T-money card at the airport. Available at convenience stores in Incheon Airport arrivals. Load it with won for seamless metro, bus and taxi payments.
  • Download any K-pop venue apps or tickets in advance. Popular shows and experiences sell out. Having digital tickets on your phone saves time at the door.

Seoul eSIM data guide

Seoul is an extremely high-data city. Between constant metro navigation, restaurant lookups, translation apps, shopping comparisons and social media sharing, you'll use data heavily every day. K-pop fans and shoppers tend to use even more.

  • 1-3GB suits a very short stopover of 1-2 days with light use.
  • 5-10GB covers a 3-7 day Seoul city trip with regular navigation and photo sharing.
  • 15-20GB suits a 7-14 day trip with heavy shopping, K-pop activities and social media use. The Asia plan (up to 50GB) suits multi-country trips.

Seoul eSIM FAQs

Which apps work best in Seoul?

Naver Map and KakaoMap are better than Google Maps for Korean addresses and transit. KakaoTaxi is the main ride-hailing app. Google Translate with the Korean language pack handles menus and signs. Naver is more widely used than Google for restaurant and shop searches.

Will my Seoul eSIM work on the KTX bullet train?

Yes. South Korea's KTX high-speed rail network has excellent coverage. You'll stay connected on trains between Seoul, Busan, Gyeongju and other major cities.

Can I make phone calls with a Seoul eSIM?

Our Seoul eSIM plans are data-only. For calls and texts, use KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, Messenger or FaceTime over your data connection. KakaoTalk is South Korea's dominant messaging app. Install it before you arrive.

Does my Seoul eSIM work outside Seoul?

Yes. Our South Korea plan covers the entire country. If you're visiting Busan, Jeju Island, Gyeongju or the DMZ, you're covered on the same plan. The Asia plan also works across multiple Asian countries.

How do I set up my Seoul eSIM?

After purchasing, you'll receive an email with a QR code. Scan it in your phone's settings to install the eSIM profile. You can do this at home before your trip. When you land at Incheon, switch your data to the new eSIM line and you're connected.

Is a Seoul eSIM cheaper than roaming with my Australian carrier?

Significantly. Australian carriers charge steep daily rates for international roaming in Asia. A Seoul eSIM is a flat, prepaid cost for your entire trip. No daily charges, no bill shock when you get home.

Will my eSIM work at the DMZ?

The main DMZ tour areas and the Joint Security Area (JSA) have coverage. Signal may be restricted or limited in certain zones near the border for security reasons. Your tour operator will handle logistics, so you won't need data for navigation there.

Exploring beyond Seoul? Our South Korea plan covers the whole country including Busan and Jeju Island. Our Asia plan also covers Japan and Thailand. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, our South Korea SIM card is available for delivery before you fly.
